Decision Makers: School Principal

We ask ISS to unban makeup at school and replace the no “heavy” makeup rule with a fair policy that respects student choice and self-expression. Right now, this kind of rule sends the wrong message: it polices appearance, reinforces rigid gender roles, and places unfair pressure on girls and young women to fit someone else’s idea of how they “should” look.

At school, students should be judged on their character, effort, and learning, not on whether they choose to wear makeup. A rule like this can feel especially unequal when it targets female students more harshly than others, creating a double standard that does not belong in a modern, respectful school environment.

Makeup can be a form of creativity, confidence, and personal style. For many students, it is part of how they present themselves in a way that feels comfortable and authentic. School should support that, not punish it.

We also know that confidence matters. When students feel good about themselves, they are often more focused, more comfortable, and better able to do their best work. That is the kind of atmosphere ISS should encourage.

By signing this petition, we are asking ISS to lead with fairness, equality, and respect for student expression. Let’s build a school environment where students are treated with dignity and allowed to be themselves.

It's important to me because makeup is a form of self expression. Me wearing makeup doesn't take away from my learning or take away anything about my personality.

This is such an important ongoing issue to address within International School, mainly ISS at the moment. Students of all genders, mainly girls, should have the right to express themselves freely through any form of self care that does not harm anyone. Makeup is a way of yourself, boosting confidence, and in the process, no teachers or other students are harmed. Enforcing rules and threatening suspension for something that has nothing to do with the teachers is not okay.

The rule does not correlate with today’s morden fashion and standards, makeup is used as a form of expression, self confidence and for some, therapeutic so limiting students to makeup is just causing problems. Overall it’s just stupid and a useless rule that just confines students from expressing their true identity.
