We are asking the Clarence City Council for the gravel footpath along Surf Road in Seven Mile Beach to be continued to Tidal Cafe, so people can get there safely on foot.
At the moment, the footpath ends just before the local Fire Station, and there is no proper pedestrian access to the cafe at the end of Surf Road. Many families are already walking and riding that way, but they are left with unsafe choices. One option is to use the gravel track that runs parallel to the beach and then cross at the point where Surf Road turns into Gruber Avenue, on a corner where cars are travelling at 80km per hour. The other option is to walk or ride along Surf Road itself, with no protection from traffic and cars also travelling at 80km per hour.
It makes a simple trip to the cafe feel unsafe, particularly for people who use wheelchairs, people with mobility needs, and families with young children, including those walking with prams or riding bikes and scooters.
It also limits access for people who would prefer to leave the car at home. On busy days, there are often not enough car parking spaces for everyone wanting to visit Tidal Cafe, yet many people would prefer to walk or ride a bike if there were a safe path to do so.
We want a connected gravel footpath that gives the whole community a safer, easier and more practical way to reach Tidal Cafe via Surf Road, without having to share the road with fast-moving traffic
It's the only logical solution. The side of the road is uneven, often has dead animals and will become snakey during summer. A track may also lessen the amount of cars in the small carpark too! Going through the dunes track means you are required to share the gravel road at the end with cars and then cross the busy 80km bend to get to Tidal. Please don't wait for an accident to make it happen!
