My family and I have lived on Salmon River Road for the past six years. In that time, we’ve witnessed a significant and continuous increase in traffic. Unfortunately, this growth has come at the cost of safety for local residents — particularly families with children.

The current conditions make it extremely difficult and dangerous for families to walk, bike, or allow their children to travel safely, even for short distances. There is little to no shoulder in many areas, and no designated path for pedestrians or cyclists. I have personally lost two beloved dogs to reckless driving, and I regularly witness vehicles speeding past pedestrians, cyclists, and even stopped school buses — sometimes ignoring the activated stop signs entirely.

My family is very active. My children often use their electric scooters to visit friends in town. I ride an electric bike and pull my daughter in a Thule trailer. We also enjoy walking and running with our dog. However, every outing feels like a risk. Drivers frequently pass us at high speeds, fail to move over, and even make hostile gestures or shout at us to “get off the road.” This behavior is not only unsafe — it is unacceptable.

Despite signage along Salmon River Road encouraging drivers to “Share the Road” with horseback riders, walkers, farm vehicles, and cyclists, compliance is extremely low. The reality is that this road is no longer safe for anything other than fast-moving vehicles — and that must change.

I am urging the city of spallumcheen and local decision-makers to consider the implementation of a dedicated walking and biking path along Salmon River Road. This is a family-oriented area, and we deserve infrastructure that supports safe, healthy, and accessible transportation for everyone — not just motorists.

Our community needs a solution before another tragedy occurs. Please help us make Salmon River Road safer for all.

We need a safer option for people walking or biking along Salmon River Rd. I can't even allow my children to take the bus home as the bus stop is around a blind corner with no shoulder for them to walk on either side and an embankment on the one side as well. We have witness multiple single vehicle accidents along this road because people were simply not paying attention and going too fast. One of these days someone is going to be killed or seriously injured.

When our family resided on Noble Rd we always wanted to use Salmon River Rd. for bike riding or walking with the kids. However it wasn’t safe to do so with traffic going 70km/h at best. Currently as a District 83 School Bus Driver, we have several students that wait to board and disembark our buses along that road daily and a walking path would allow them a safe place to travel to and from the bus.

Part of the reason we didn’t consider living out on salmon River road was this lack of path, it’s immediately noticeably dangerous for families to navigate the area. Some kind of path would be hugely helpful for this area

I’ve lived in this road for 18 years and it’s way too dangerous to walk down now a days unfortunately. We drive my daughter to school because she can’t walk 3/4 of a Km down the road to her bus stop as it’s way too unsafe with the fast truckers and speeders. Please help!

I too love on this road and couldn’t agree more, it’s not safe for pedestrians walking or biking, and the new double yellow no passing lines are broken consistently, people rip past you if you’re walking with kids to the bus. We need something similar to what silver creek has!

Agree we need at least one side with wide shoulder on Salmon River Road for walkers/cyclists. I usually pull baby stroller or wagon into ditch or our dogs when a vehicle approaches from either direction.

There is no shoulder. It is not safe for children to walk from their homes to the bus stops.
