Aetna should approve Nathan Galinas’s surgery for Pectus Excavatum so he can get the care his doctors have recommended.
Nathan is 14 years old and was diagnosed with Pectus Excavatum at 9. We were told that the condition could get worse during puberty, and it did. Nathan was once an active kid, but now he is afraid to be active. He has started having chest pain and stomach pain. He no longer wants anyone to see him without a shirt. At the beach, he wears swim shirts and is constantly pulling the shirt away from his chest.
We have done everything asked of us. We tried physical therapy and also saw a doctor for a vacuum bell. Nathan’s doctors at CHOP and Nemours both recommended the NUSS procedure. We went through all the tests and pre-op appointments, only to be told by Aetna that he does not qualify under their criteria and that the surgery is not medically necessary. We have documentation from the doctor’s office saying otherwise.
We have already been through two reviews with Aetna, and both were denied. The external review was also denied. That leaves our family with nowhere else to turn while Nathan continues to live with pain, limits on his daily life, and growing fear about his body.
We are asking Aetna to reconsider and approve the NUSS procedure for Nathan without further delay. Please sign and share this petition so Nathan can get the surgery his doctors believe he needs.
Hope he can get the surgery! No child should have to petition to get surgery 🤍
