Would you support having ice available year-round in Saugeen Shores?
For years Hockey players and Figure Skaters have had to travel out of town during late spring and summer to continue their training for tournaments, competitions, tryouts etc.. Recreational skating and hockey programs end long before summer programs begin.
In 2020, Town Council approved a 3-year summer pilot where we would see the ice remain in at the Plex all year starting in 2021. With the impact of COVID, this pilot was understandably put on hold with the agreement it would be implemented once we were through the pandemic.
Representatives of the primary user groups initiated discussions with the Saugeen Shores Recreation Department in the spring of 2023 to try to get the approved pilot program back on track for our community. A draft proposal was presented including an impressive list of potential programs that had been brought forward by interested parties. The primary user representatives understood their request would be discussed with Town Council at the next budget meeting in the fall.
At the meeting recommendations from the Recreation Department were given for discussions to take place in 2025 for the possibility of summer ice to start in 2027.
We are looking to demonstrate the support for year-round ice so we can open a discussion with Town Council about having year-round ice in Saugeen Shores sooner than the proposed target of 2027

Leaving the ice in the summer opens up the door for so many programs that don't get offered here or we have to travel outside of the area for (adult learn to skate, power skating, summer figure skate to name only a few). We would also use it for birthday parties and family get togethers!
