We write to express our disappointment over the new procedures put in place for the 4th of July parade. We ask that the prohibition on distributing candy along the parade route issued by the Winnetka Police Department and the Winnetka Park District be rescinded. We understand that this policy was put in place with the best intentions. As it has been explained, the prohibition on distributing candy along the parade route was made in order to protect our children from candy that may be tampered with as well as discourage children from running into the parade route to find candy. We greatly appreciate your concern for the well being our children, but respectfully suggest that less drastic measures could accomplish these goals. We are certain that guidelines can be established to protect the public without undermining the tradition and fun of excited little children lining the Village Streets in anticipation of receiving candy and trinkets from the parade participants. We ask that you keep our small town parade a small town event without big city rules and regulations.
