Dear Public Health Officer, Dr. Sara H. Cody, MD and SCC Board of Supervisors:
Please reconsider the policy of prohibiting parades and drive-by celebrations in Santa Clara County.
We understand the need to keep the public safe during the Covid-19 pandemic and that the objective of the prohibition is to prevent transmission of the virus.
However, with the following procedures, the safety concerns are mitigated:
- All participants maintain social distancing both within and outside the cars.
- All participants shall wear masks
- All events shall take place outside
Pursuant to the state and national health guidelines, these mitigating processes prevent the transmission of Covid-19. Therefore, the pretense that this prohibition is in place to protect the public is without merit.
Further, the fact that Santa Clara County is the only county in California (perhaps the USA) to ban parades demonstrates that the prohibition is not warranted.
We have given up so much as social humans these past weeks, and up until recently, car parades and drive-by celebrations were a means to connect in some way as humans and say “I see you” and “I honor you” and “I am with you.” We shouldn’t have to commit an act of civil disobedience to safely acknowledge a birthday or a graduation.
We urge you to immediately change the policy prohibiting parades and drive-by celebrations.

I have been reviewing the feedback from residents who maintain that these celebrations provide vital social connection while remaining safe. These accounts illustrate the personal cost of the current policy and confirm that a revision is necessary to better serve our community. I am currently preparing a formal presentation to address these concerns with the board.

The momentum behind this petition highlights a clear desire for safe community connection. It is encouraging to see so many people advocate for common sense adjustments to our current local policies.

These drive-by celebrations were born out of this pandemic as a SAFE ALTERNATIVE to people coming together face to face. Banning them totally has only served to make us all shake our heads at this decision. Would you prefer we all secretly gather in person in backyards? Because that’s exactly what this is doing. Do the right thing and ease up on YOUR INTERPRETATION of the health code orders.
LAHS would love to celebrate our students and have the opportunity to say good-bye and provide closure for the summer in a safe way. The Class of 2020 deserves some closure and celebration for all of the work that they have done over the past four years! Thank you for your consideration!
Los Altos High School would love to have a parade for teachers to say goodbye to their students but we had to cancel it. Almond Elementary school had a great parade and they loved it last month!
Haven’t these graduates suffered enough? This is just one more thing that has been taken away from them and this doesn’t make sense. They deserve to be celebrated and car parades are probably the safest way at this time.

If you do not allow safe alternatives to celebrating significant events people will ignore SiP directives and do things that will potentially spread COVID 19. Allow for safe ways for people to celebrate safely at a distance

San Mateo County is allowing our Highschool to do this and our Seniors are excited!!! Give them something to celebrate
