The county board officially approved the budget for the Weeksville multi-use path this afternoon. We now shift our focus to monitoring the engineering phase to ensure the final design matches our safety requirements.

Please let our county and local officials know that you support safer pedestrian and multi-use (bicycle) routes in Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County! Sign this petition if you agree that we need a safe bicycle and pedestrian route along Weeksville Road from River Road to Consolidated Road in front of the Coast Guard Base and Elizabeth City Airport.
The multi-use path would be the first of a series of safer routes for bicycles and pedestrians in the county, which benefits auto-commuters with less traffic congestion, reduced auto exhaust, and improved health for all county residents. It benefits our local military community as well as permanent residents, and increases the chances military families will choose to live and play in the county in which they work.
There are several opportunities to obtain grant funding for the project, so your county and local officials simply need to know that you support the installation of this route.

I am currently organizing the collected signature data to present to the county commissioners during our upcoming briefing. My focus is finalizing the formal proposal on grant eligibility to ensure our request is ready for the next budget review cycle.

Biking on Weeksville Road from River Road to Consolidated road is a high risk act with no safe alternatives other than not biking. It is dangerous for both bikers and drivers. A multi-use path would be much safer and be a great addition to our community.
Not only would I use it as a place to go with my son, but it would get the bicyclists hopefully off the highway. I have seen way too many close calls (with both the bicyclists and cars at fault at times, not just cars).
This stretch of road is the most dangerous piece of my bike route. Cars wiz by at 65 mph and there is no shoulder.
What are years I was a competitive cyclist who lived in Weeksville. Most dangerous stretch of road we ever had to ride was Weeksville highway in front of the Coast Guard base.
This is a great idea. Our community needs safer biking, running and walking routes for commuting and recreation. Connecting the Coast Guard base to the rest of the city would be a perfect place to start. Utilizing abandoned railway lines in Elizabeth City to create rails-to-trails greenway spaces would bring countless benefits to our community.
Great idea....but has anyone researched where it would be located? When you have an idea, you also need a plan to present to the County Board. Most of our county roads are to narrow between the ditches for a bike right away. Are property owners willing to sign over a right away to the County? The County can't invest in a project without knowing the right away won't be closed by the property owner someday.
This is much needed for safety as well as encouraging recreational cycling. It would be a dream come true for us.

Bike paths have universally increased tax revenue, saved lives, and improved quality of life. If we lose one more of our our servicemen or citizens due to inaction, what a crime that would be!
