Residents of Waukena Avenue in Oceanside are asking for the enforcement of the 8000lb weight limit. Over the past decade, with lack of attention, Waukena has become a commercial shortcut for truckers. On a daily basis, hundreds of violations take place. Our homes shake every time heavy container trucks and tractor trailers ignore the law. This has not only decreased the value of our property but makes for dangerous driving conditions and no quality of life. We have three requests:
1. An effort be made to bring the situation under control.
2. This spring the Rockville Centre Police Department aided residents with a similar problem on Lincoln Avenue. They placed digital signs at each access point to warn drivers of the consequences. According to officials the signs were very effective in deterring violators. We are asking for these same signs to be placed on Waukena for several months.
3. From this point on, we ask that the officers on duty in Oceanside be made aware of the problem and instructed to ticket any violator they may witness.
The trucks keep rolling down Waukena and I am exhausted by the constant vibration of my own walls. I am still reaching out to local offices to push for those digital signs because we deserve a quiet street. It feels like a long road ahead but I am not walking away from this.
