Transit Benefit Legislation
We need your help. We know you appreciate the tax savings when you buy your transit pass. Would you like many more Californians to get this same great benefit? The State is considering a plan to do just that. SB 582 will allow regions within California to adopt a program to require businesses of 20 or more employees to offer transit benefits--at least if there is a demand for it by employees. Several cities in the Bay Area already do this, and, in the case of San Francisco, it has doubled the number of employers offering the program. Many businesses and local Chambers of Commerce have come out in support of this. They understand that if everyone offers these benefits, more employees will use transit. This means less traffic congestion, better air quality, and a better environment for all of us. The California State Assembly and Senate have just voted in support. Now the bill is before Governor Brown and he has 10 days to sign it. We need to show the Governor that there is support for legislation that makes transit more affordable, helps the environment, and gives employees access to tax savings to pay for transit.
