As a community of love and peace, we must now do the right thing, the slave market located in the heart of our dear community is a continued symbol and constant reminder of hate, crime, violence, discrimination, racism, and oppression that was once wickedly thrust upon black people without sympathy, this piece of monstrosity really serves no purpose except to keep a constant dark cloud over the black community and our beloved county, Jefferson. So let us, of all races voice our concern in Jefferson County Georgia, to come together and denounce this symbol of hate and request it to be torn down or removed from yonder place to a museum.

The county commissioners are still ignoring our demands but their silence just exposes their cowardice. This monument is a stain on our streets and we will not stop until they stop protecting this monument to human suffering.

I think this is a part of the ugly past to this cute little town. I think it belongs in a museum, where people can learn from it and be educated by the past. It should not be an everyday public reminder of the inhumane life people of color had to endure.
I lived here all my life Until some years ago and this was a reminder. I think it should be removed bc we don’t need a reminder of the past, we live it everyday. Remove it so our present and future can be without a reminder of the past and be brighter.
I am ashamed to say this still stands in Jefferson County, my first home. The time is long past due to remove this visual reminder of a dark and violent history. Removing this structure is obviously not enough, but it is a start.
I am from Matthews, Georgia. When my daughter attended Wrens Elementary School, they went on a field trip to the slave market. It was embarrassing to know that the Board allowed this as a field trip. It should have been gone a long time ago.
I worked in Louisville for 10 years on Broad Street a few feet away from it and it made me sick on my stomach to have to see it every single day knowing why it was put there and the history behind it....Its time for it to be removed
It need to be taken down
Old monuments and symbols glorify and perpetuate racism and the evils that resulted from it. It belongs in a museum--Not in the town square to be reminded of it every day.

My family comes from Louisville, GA. Although I was born and raised in TN all my life, any time I visited and saw this I felt a pit in my stomach thinking about everything that has happened in that gazebo. It isn’t right. It isn’t “historical”. It needs to be removed.
