United Council For Equality is calling for the removal of the Confederate Monument in downtown Portsmouth, VA, and that it be placed in a Civil War museum of history. The tax paying citizens of Portsmouth should not have to be reminded every day of the painful past. The real heroes of the war were those who risked their lives to fight for their freedom. However, instead of honoring them, the monument honors the Confederate soldiers who fought to continue the inhumane practice of slavery. Though that is part of our national history, the monument should be placed in a museum so that generations can continue to learn from the past, and our city can continue to move forward in peace as one city and one nation!

The women who built this monument wanted to use this structure to honor the old antebellum south, a place where slavery would still exist.

To erect statues of people who fought for the establishment of slavery, America's greatest shame, is hypocritical to equality and forgiveness
