Old monuments and symbols glorify and perpetuate racism and the evils that resulted from it. It belongs in a museum--Not in the town square to be reminded of it every day.

Grew up here... I remember ten years ago in highschool we were asking for this to be removed! It's long overdue. Wanna conserve? Move it to a museum, don't leave it up in the heart of the city. This is not a piece of history to be proud of.

It brought hurt to my heart to know of a slave market in Ga. I had never heard of it until now. Is this in history books?

I am Black and a Southerner, involved in preservation and cultural history of the South. I have cried many tears about the tragedy surrounding the enslavement of Africans, and I think there must be acknowledgement of the economic success enslaved Africans brought to this country. For me, the buildings of that era should stand as testimony to what happened, so that we learn from the horror of what humans have done to other humans. There needs to be healing at that square and better interpretation of that market, rather than one sign telling the story. I have been able to find out the enslavement legacy of my family, on the plantation, now I own part of that plantation, because my family built it. I am in the process of telling the next generation in the history of how we survived. Keep the structure, even if it is moved, but tell the story so we learn from the past, and heal.

I think this is a part of the ugly past to this cute little town. I think it belongs in a museum, where people can learn from it and be educated by the past. It should not be an everyday public reminder of the inhumane life people of color had to endure.
