We, the undersigned members of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) community, along with our brothers and sisters in Law Enforcement and Fire Services, our families, and our supporters, stand together in unwavering solidarity to demand the passage of Assembly Bill A4364. EMS professionals are part of the backbone of New Jersey’s public safety system, responding to emergencies with skill, dedication, and sacrifice. Yet, despite our critical role, we continue to be denied the same retirement benefits afforded to our fellow first responders. This inequity is not just unfair—it is unsustainable.
The EMS workforce in New Jersey is in crisis. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of certified EMTs has declined from approximately 22,000 to just 19,000—a significant drop that threatens the stability of emergency medical response across our state. Without meaningful incentives such as this Bill, we risk further depletion of our workforce, putting both public safety and patient care in jeopardy. Passage of A4364 is not just about fairness—it is a necessary step to recruit and retain skilled EMS professionals.
Firefighters and Police Officers stand with us because they know firsthand the challenges we face. Our families stand with us because they know the sacrifices we make. Our friends and communities stand with us because they rely on us in their worst moments. Together, we are calling for action. EMS deserves recognition, respect, and the same retirement security that our public safety counterparts receive.

As a provider for nearly 30 years, I’ve watched PD and FD colleagues start and finish their respective careers and then retire before their body’s break down. EMS needs to be an essential service in NJ, no matter what the League of Municipalities says. Figure it out.
I have been an EMT since 1985 and full-time since 2005. Next year I can retire after 40 years of service. There is no way that the lifespan of an EMT with the scope of work, call volume, PTSD, depression and exhaustion that we go through should we expected to do more time in a pension system then a firefighter or police officer and get less benefits.
As a former, currently retired, NJ paramedic I unequivocally support passage of this bill. I gave 42 years as an EMT and Paramedic (retiring for job-related physical issues) , and have minimal pension (only because I had a plan thru my hospital employer). I think it is time to repair the oversight, and provide for my brother's and sisters.
Paramedic for HMH. I hate that I run calls with other EMS and Fire and Police yet I have to 100% pay fr my own retirement putting myself in the same category of worker.
Let’s get this done. Eighty percent of emergency responses are EMS related. This will help incentivize people to join the EMS work force. The workload of this workforce is outpacing many communities ability to keep up with it.

As a former underpaid EMT-B for the City of Somers Point, NJ, I fully support this bill. I left EMS because I had to work three jobs to support my family. I loved EMS, but I could not afford to live on what I was paid.
