EMTs and Paramedics: The Most Underpaid and Underappreciated First Responders.
They are the first you call when someone is dying but make minimum wage and less than some fast food restaurant employees . It’s time we pay them what they deserve.

My son has been an EMT since he was 16 years old. He’s still at it at 35. As a first responder in the Ed for many years, I see the need for this type of equality!!

As a former underpaid EMT-B for the City of Somers Point, NJ, I fully support this bill. I left EMS because I had to work three jobs to support my family. I loved EMS, but I could not afford to live on what I was paid.

In my 16 years as a career EMS provider in the 911 prehospital setting, I've come to understand how EMS has always been sadly been ignored, overlooked, and not as dangerous, heroic, essential, or glamorous as our colleagues in career law enforcement or fire roles. We are treated differently and chronically face systemic inequities, especially in being excluded from the benefits, retirement ages, pensions, and coverage and public awareness of the lack thereof in our field. It's time for change and to be recognized and treated with equity and offered the same benefits and protection that have always been provided for LEO's and Firefighters.

After starting my paid EMS Career as a Civil Service EMT at JCMC EMS in April 1981 and still working as a Paramedic 44 years later for HMH JFK EMS in Monmouth County on the same Units that replaced the Monoc ones I worked since March 1993. Pay has gotten better, but we still have not obtained our position and recognition as the Fire and Law Enforcement are!!!

As a former and now "retired" EMS supervisor in Newark NJ I think it's long overdue for both the pay scale and retirement benefits for EMS in the state, especially in the inner cities to be brought up to the fair and proper amount. In a profession where we too quite often times are the determining factor between life and death, we continue to be treated as the bastard children of all Emergency Services. For far too long has our efforts gone unnoticed, unrecognized, and forgotten by most. It needs to stop! And now is the time to make things right!

NJ EMS are emergency personnel just like police officers & fire fighters. As such, they too, should have a special pension. Please support them in this endeavor & give them what they rightfully deserve for the difficult life saving services they provide for the citizens of NJ.

Too long we have worked without a retirement plan that is similar to the other emergency services.
