The undersigned would like to express our support for various efforts being taken to construct workforce housing in and around Northeast Harbor and specifically for the recently proposed development at the corner of Neighborhood and Manchester roads.

MD 365’s proposal for six affordable units is seeking approval in front of the town Planning Board in June. Upon completion, the .79-acre lot will have two duplexes and two standalone homes. This modest condominium development will house working families and be built in a manner consistent with the neighborhoods character and all applicable zoning regulations. Such a legal ownership structure justifies zero concern about the maintenance or appearance of the lot as residents will have major equity in their homes.

There can be no doubt housing affordability has made it more and more difficult for year-round residents to live and raise families in NEH. The health of the public school system, the vitality of main street, and the local economy generally face existential threats from the housing shortage. Increasing the stock of homes for winter residents is imperative for the survival of the community broadly, and this proposal is a reasonable and effective step in that direction.

We encourage the Planning Board to approve this application.

Updates

January 3, 2023

The Planning Board is still dragging its feet while actual working families are being priced out of our own town. We are showing up to demand they approve this MD 365 proposal instead of protecting the status quo that kills our community character.

January 3, 2023

The Planning Board cannot keep ignoring the reality that our town is dying because working families have nowhere to live. This momentum proves that our community is finished with the excuses and is demanding the housing we desperately need.

More affordable housing for year-round families makes obvious sense, as does the location in the village of other residences - within walking distance of shops, school, library, harbor.

As someone who would love to stay in NEH long term, I support this housing initiative and hope we can expand the affordable housing options in NEH.

MD 365's initiatives are a small step towards keeping Northeast Harbor a viable year round community. I heartily support their proposal.

I fully support work force housing in North East harbor. We absolutely must have affordable housing options in our town. Hard working folks to work in our schools ,fire department, hotels ,restaurants, coffee shops , and ect. I live at 25 Millbrook rd.

Affordable year round housing is the foundation of community. Opposition to this project is shortsighted and will undermine the quality of life for all residents; year round and seasonal.
