We, the undersigned residents of Canada, wish to express our opposition to the plan to approve for non-farm use and to rezone agricultural land at 181 Brinkworthy Rd. so that it can be developed for recreational use and a parking lot.
Whereas the subject property is a rarity on Salt Spring: fifteen acres of flat, prime agricultural land with adequate water and good exposure;
Whereas thirty percent of Salt Spring's Agricultural Land Reserve has already been used for other purposes or is unsuitable for farming;
Whereas neighbouring residents have expressed serious concerns about the plans to log the property, and the consequences of transforming it into a major recreational hub;
Whereas climate change requires measures such as forest retention for carbon sequestration and an increase in local, sustainable food production;
Whereas neighbouring residents are still strongly opposed to the plans, despite recent consultations;
Whereas there are other options for increasing recreational potential on Salt Spring;
Whereas the local Agricultural Advisory Committee has strongly recommended against approval of non-farm use of the land;
Weask that the Agricultural Land Commission reject the request for
non-farm use for 181 Brinkworthy Road, and we ask that the Islands Trust
proceed no further with plans to rezone the land.

ALR land should be sacrosanct. Once it is removed frm the ALR or used for non-agricultural purposes, it is lost forever to agriculture. For the sake of food security and the future of the planet, we need to get our priorities straight and protect agricultural land as if it were gold.
Local landowners were NOT consulted in the early stages of this proposal, nor informed about relevant meetings until pressed for information. Are we now letting the CRD make planning decisions for islanders? There's a web we'll never get out of!
This proposal has so many negatives but for me, personally, it would be the end of my hope for a peaceful, happy retirement as I live along the lane part of Brinkworthy Road. It will destroy my peace of mind. Please don't let this happen.
Let's respect our Elders! This should really be a no brainer. A ball park in the backyard of seniors who want peace and quiet. Goodness sakes isn't it obvious to our Trust that the Elders needs should be respected.
Reclaim land that has already been destroyed, such as the gravel pits between Cushion Lake and the Creekside Rainforest. Precious ALR land can never be restored and will grow in value exponentially in the years to come. Butchart Gardens was once a quarry, after all.
I don't understand why I see the ball park at Portlock and at GISS empty all the time and people claim we need more baseball diamonds.
Keep this agricultural land.

Not only is this agricultural land, converting a large proportion of the field to a parking lot and astro-turf, will result in permanent loss of topsoil and likely chemical runoff issues in an area involving 3 watersheds where they intersect.
