Prompted by concerns over water quality and a rise in interest in swimming and other water sports, an application is being made to DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) for the River Ouse to become a designated area for bathing. This petition seeks to specifically gain support from residents in the Lewes area who swim in the Ouse or who would like to if the water quality was improved.

I would like to go kayaking on the river but I'm afraid of falling in and becoming infected with something nasty.

I like to swim at Barcombe Mills with friends, some of them have stopped after becoming ill after swimming

The Ouse is already a popular swimming river regardless of designation. Let us help to make it safer and less invidious with local landowners.

I think the water quality should be up to a safe level anyway if canoeing clubs use it so yes I'm all for making sure defra put the level up to that of bathing quality .

Excellent idea. It really stinks of of sewage swimming there and I have seen sewage being pumped into the river near the sloop pub from a treatment works. It would amazing to swim there in clean water! Please all sign

Lewes resident BN7 2SJ. This is a river running through a Nationa Park, and should not be used by Southern Wate as an open sewer.

Barcombe Mills is awesome (when the water quality is good). Agree that English rivers in general should be more openly accessible to swimmers and paddlers. Wales and Scotland appear to have no issues with rivers as a recreational resource and nor did England in days of yore. Suggested reading - Roger Deakin's 'Waterlog'
