About the proposal:
The proposed oyster lease is a small plot in Sakonnet River, north of Glen Manor House. Oysters will be grown in floating bags and sold locally. This type of oyster farming not only grows beautiful oysters and provides a sustainable source of seafood, but is also beneficial to the environment. Each individual oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day, producing large quantities of clean water in the coastal zone. Further, small oyster farms do not restrict recreational activities, such as kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding and swimming. Instead, oyster farms will help Rhode Island maintain its cultural heritage as a working waterfront—a heritage which is inextricably connected to the people of Rhode Island’s social and economic well-being. As outdoor enthusiasts, we recognize the need to balance the importance of outdoor recreational opportunities while maintaining the integrity of Rhode Island’s historic and future working waterfronts.

I really thought this might just stay a local conversation but seeing all these people jump on board is honestly blowing my mind. It feels like we are actually hitting a nerve with the whole waterfront heritage idea and I am just sitting here staring at my screen trying to process how many people care about oysters. We have to keep pushing this energy toward the hearing because things are finally moving in a real way.

Have things gotten to the point that some people now believe providing good food and cleaning the environment is somehow detrimental?
This should be a no-brainer. Creates local jobs, helps the environment, and helps the economy. Go Dan!
Aquaculture is a great way to improve the ecosystem while boosting the local year-round economy! I am in full support, thank you for diversifying Rhode Island’s waterfront!
No brainer, why would you want more delicious locally grown oysters? Good for the environment and good for you!
This is a great opportunity for the start of a small business in the area and will help purify the water, which is incredibly important.
