The administration confirmed that students will regain access to the hallways during lunch. I am submitting a feedback plan to monitor the transition and ensure this policy remains in place for the upcoming semesters.

Students permitted in the halls at lunch

School is a place to grow, a place to learn and most importantly a place to feel welcome. Unfortunately, at F.E. Madill secondary that is not the case for a large majority of the students. Students are not allowed in the halls, instead they are forced into two locations, the cafeteria, the library or off school property. Now why is this? Before the COVID-19 pandemic this was allowed and many other schools in our school board have already brought this back so why can't we? Why are students being told we can't because its illegal? Is it only illegal in F.E. because other schools can? Why can't students be allowed in the halls INSIDE the school they are enrolled in during lunch time? Students are asking that they be allowed back in the halls at lunch. One of our learning goals is self regulation, how are kids supposed to learn to self regulate being forced into one place with no responsibility, being treated like 2 year old and expected to act like adults. This is one of the reasons students are hating this school and not wanting to go. Students are leaving school property, a safe place, because they are scared to get yelled at during lunch.

I have requested a formal meeting with the school administration to address the discrepancy between our policy and those of other schools in the board. We are currently preparing a briefing document that outlines the safety risks of forcing students to leave property during their lunch period.

The volume of support has secured a meeting with the principal to discuss the current hallway policy. I am currently drafting a formal proposal that outlines the discrepancies between our school rules and the standards at other campuses in our board.

Some people don’t wanna sit in loud places or outside in the cold, they should be able to walk around and enjoy the break
I may not attend school but I think it’s so stupid that teachers preach our independence when growing up and being in high school yet they won’t let us walk around the halls without being monitored…. Lol
I understand rules and regulations can change over time, however my grade 9 year.. before COVID was even a word we could roam the halls. Some of the friendships I’ve made over my last 5 at Madill were because of roaming the halls with students I may never have had the chance to talk to do to not being in classes together. Not only should this be brought back for reasons already mentioned but for the well fair of students (school is safer than roaming the streets of Wingham) and for the socializing (most students mental health is positively impacted by who and how often they interact with friends)
literally just trying to eat my lunch without being crowded by 500 kids in the cafeteria. its so loud in there i can barely hear myself think half the time
I think this is a great idea, and student should be free to roam the school during lunchtime

i 100% agree, we get treated with such ignorance. during lunch hours we can’t even go to the bathroom without being followed and getting yelled at.
