Stop the proposed cycle lane on Stamfordham road
This proposal comes at a time when the local road network is already under significant strain. Recent large-scale housing developments—totalling around 3,000 new homes—have been approved without the necessary infrastructure or alternative routes to ease the pressure on existing roads. As a result, residents are already experiencing worsening congestion, longer journey times, and increased traffic through the area.
Rather than addressing these existing challenges, this scheme risks making them significantly worse. Reducing road capacity on a key route will further restrict traffic flow, increase bottlenecks, and negatively impact residents, commuters, and emergency access. Local businesses, many of which rely on passing trade and accessible parking, also stand to suffer as congestion increases and accessibility declines.
The environmental impact of this proposal is equally concerning. The trees earmarked for removal are not only a defining feature of the area’s character and visual appeal, but they also play an important role in absorbing carbon emissions and improving air quality along an already heavily trafficked road. Their loss would undermine any claimed environmental benefits of the scheme.
Furthermore, the scale of this proposal does not reflect current travel patterns. Cycling remains a very small proportion of journeys, particularly in suburban areas like this, raising serious questions about whether this level of disruption and environmental damage can be justified.
This scheme, as it stands, places unnecessary strain on an already stretched community, removes valued green infrastructure, and fails to address the real transport needs of local residents.

It’s all about government incentives for councils that open up cycle lanes. I can understand why a cycle lane could help to increase fitness, and reduce traffic and pollution, however Stamfordham Rd is the wrong place for one with traffic congestion already being a problem.
Westerhope village has always been well maintained, got village of the year by a gardening programme years ago , please do not wreck our village by putting cycle lanes , most cyclists ignore cycle lanes anyway, save our nice village
I think this is a crazy idea as we live on highfield right ithe flow of traffic is a nightmare to get out into Stamfordham road Please rethink this and mane. Give us the bypass promised when you built all of the new estates
I do not want to see the green spaces removed impacting environmental and wildlife, in addition to the general aesthetics of the main village. Just how many cyclists use this route and what benefits would support this level of investment and disruption to motorists and general public?
It would be a ridiculous idea to have a cycle lane considering how many accidents already happen on this stretch of road and with how many people fly through the village already and high volume of traffic from all the new builds down in callerton.
Recently many wildfires occured around Britain, it is absurd to cut down trees after the devastation that has already occured to Britains greenary.
In a time where more and more green areas are being destroyed due to extra housing, the last thing we need is to remove trees and wildlife in order to add a cycle path. A cycle path that many people in the area to not wish to have. Furthermore, the act of removing these trees will disrupt the road that already faces heavy strain due to the amount of cars on it.

A ridiculous was of council tax/tax payers money. Have you seen the abortion in Hexham. I drive to Hexham daily and see a handful of cyclist using the actual roadway, where did they get their statistics warranting such a waste of money. Better spent on repairing potholes.
