Dear Ms Jerri King and Ms Nahla Nasser,

We received your email about the cancellation of the Nutcracker performance by the Primary students. We are dismayed and disappointed as this has been a school tradition for long time and done so well by the Primary teachers. It is the only showcase for the Primary level children that incorporates all the children and does not exclude anyone. It has been an opportunity for the children to display what they learned for the semester at holiday time and they are always so excited to be a part of it. We have not felt it takes a substantial time away from the classroom and it teaches them invaluable lessons of speaking and performing in groups and in public.

We would like to discuss with your administration further on the decision-making around this cancellation and appeal if there is any format we can resurrect this for the Primary classes.

Sincerely,

The Primary Parents of 2019-2020

Reaching this point has been a long and draining road for all of us. Seeing so many people recognize the value of this tradition gives me the grit to keep pushing toward the administration.

The nutcracker is the best thing St Stephen’s does as a performance each year. It impacts more kids and parents than the school musical does and has had a more lasting impact on both of our children over the last three years. We love that The primary teachers get to run and take pride in it, and that they are respectful of the kids’ time (unlike the school musical). I am dismayed that it’s being cancelled for spurious-sounding reasons.

Bailey our granddaughter has been at St. Stephens for seven years. Three of those years she was in the nutcracker ultimately ending up as Clara. It gave our shy little Bailey confidence and a sense of self accomplishment . We are grateful for this play and grateful for Miss Gladis who gives up so much of her personal time to be with these children during this performance casting each one in a perfect role .

It is very short-sighted to stop a tradition that makes St Stephens so special. The Nutcracker performance demonstrates to the Houston community and the world what St Stephens is about, and what children can accomplish when you motivate them and build self confidence with the Montessori method. It is the best selling point for the school. This decision is not congruent with the long term vision for the school.

It is a primary holiday tradition and my child loved it!

This was shocking and highly disappointing to hear and feels like a major misstep on the part of the administration. It shows a lack of understanding for what makes St. Stephen's special to the families . While there may be some additional logistical issues this year, cancelation should not have been an option. We strongly suggest this decision be revisited as soon as possible so that The Nutcracker can be reinstated this year.

The fine arts are a defining feature of a St Stephen’s education, and the Nutcracker is one of the key traditions that attract families to the school. Keeping the Nutcracker on this year will confirm that even under a new leadership the school remains committed to its core principles.

The Nutcracker cancellation is very disappointing, and diminishes St Stephens.

For the last 3 years, my niece or nephew has performed in the nutcracker at St. Stephens. For weeks leading up to the event, the excitement they share with us about their upcoming performance brings so much joy to the whole family. To watch these children perform in front of an audience as large as the nutcracker brings to St. Stephens is not only impressive of the children, but also of the outstanding guidance and patience they have from their teachers. Three years ago, after my niece was a snowflake in her first performance, I knew I would move mountains to attend each one until they were too old to participate. To say I am disappointed in the decision to cancel the Nutcracker this year is an understatement. This tradition is not only a St. Stephens tradition, but has become a family tradition as well.
