We, the parents, students, and staff of STEM Academy of Hollywood, are writing to make our voices heard in the Shared Use Agreement for the Helen Bernstein Campus in 2019-2020.

The last few years, we have had too few classrooms and offices. When students meet with a social worker or therapist, they never know which room to go to, because there is no designated space, and sometimes they have to get up in the middle of a session to change rooms. We need additional classrooms for our college courses, and Principal Ramirez offered us a storage room. We have had ongoing pest problems because the agreement has not designated funds, staff, and responsibilities to proactively deal with the problem. One of our teachers is in a wheelchair and needs a first-floor classroom, but Bernstein took one of ours a few years ago, and now use it one period a day.

So it makes sense that we’re frustrated that STEM has been excluded again. Mr. Ramirez has refused to schedule meetings that include STEM, and we, the parents, students, and staff of STEM have had enough. We demand that you give our students what they need to have a safe, equitable, and meaningful education, and give the teachers, parents, and staff of STEM what we need to provide that education.

Sign below to make sure Cheryl Hildreth and Alejandro Ramirez don't shut STEM out of the conversation about classrooms.

Updates

July 23, 2019

We are currently drafting a formal letter to the district leadership outlining the specific failures of the current Shared Use Agreement. Our next step is to secure a meeting with the campus administration to address the classroom allocation protocols. We will continue to document all instances where student services are disrupted by the lack of dedicated space.

The growth of this petition reached the threshold necessary to secure a formal meeting with the district oversight committee. We are now finalizing the list of specific facility requests to present during that session.

My son has to change rooms in the middle of therapy and it is just not right. These kids need stability.

The pest issues are out of control and the fact that we are ignored by admin is pathetic.

RIDICULOUS that a teacher in a wheelchair doesnt have a first floor room. Fix the scheduling and give STEM the space we were promised!

Criminal that a quality educational program would be sidelined and inhibited by a principal who is supposed to care about ALL students.

We have three special education teachers sharing one room which means the students don't get the one-on-one space and time that they are required by law. In addition, many teachers have to give up their classroom during their prep. in order for a college class to be taught. This is absolutely unacceptable when there is evidently space for all on the campus. This is an injustice to both students and teachers. LAUSD cannot fight and argue for high quality schools and then, when they get one like STEM, not support us in doing our work. We are not asking for anything out of the ordinary, There are three school sites that serves the same community. The students and the schools should have equal access.

Our students deserve equal class space and we should not be excluded as a school for this type of decision making.
