On December 8th, DCR presented it's traffic study and short/long term recommendations for changes at the intersection of Highland Ave & Fellsway East to the public. DCR made the long term recommendation of installing signals at the intersection of the Fellsway and Highland Ave. This long term recommendation must be prioritized during the 2018 State budget process in order to receive funding for work to begin in 2018. 3 strong reasons for installing signals are below:

*This intersection is in the middle of neighborhoods. Rotaries work best in commercial and highway areas, but divide neighborhoods. Installing signals supports the integrity of the existing neighborhood and allows residents the ability to live/travel safely.

*Malden has moved to the neighborhood school model. A break in traffic flow created by signalization is essential in providing children safe passage to travel to their neighborhood school.

*Many new apartment complexes have completed recently in surrounding communities and will add to the current Fellsway traffic flow. Signals will allow a necessary break in traffic flow to provide safe passage for local residents who must cross the Fellsway on a daily basis as pedestrians and/or drivers.

We ask our local representatives to request the state to prioritize this work in the 2018 state budget. The 2018 state budget process begins now.

I've walked, biked, and driven through this intersection - all three are extremely dangerous! It's confusing enough that people are focused on figuring out how to get through it rather than noticing other traffic. Adding signals will greatly improve navigation.

Traffic lights would be a significant improvement. Many people seem to think the island is a traffic circle / roundabout. We avoid driving through this intersection by using the East Border Road / Fellsway East intersection. We agree with the proposed changes as a starting point.

We as a family absolutely support installing traffic signals at the intersection of the Fellsway and Highland Ave. It can be deadly situation for children and adults trying to cross, especially in the morning rush hours.

Traffic lights are much needed! I live on this intersection and watch car accidents (many minor, some major) almost daily. My neighbors home was driven through last year. A change involving lights and better road signs, raised walkways (preferably lit walkways) is needed.

Have lived in the neighborhood for 17 years and this intersection has been a hazard to drivers and pedestrians the entire time. Accidents occur on a regular basis and it is always stressful to approach this badly designed area. It requires a common sense solution be implemented as soon as practicable.

I support this. I drive, walk, and run through the Highland Ave/Fellsway E. intersection regularly, and it does not feel safe. Last week, I witnessed a vehicle exit rotary onto Fellsway on the WRONG SIDE OF THE MEDIAN (heading toward Rt. 60).

I bike through this intersection on the way to Malden center, and every time I hear for my safety. Please make it safe for all road users.
