Wetherspoons have applied to put a new pub in St Martins Walk in Dorking. The planning application shows they wish to use the 5 units currently used by Burgandy & Black, Beatitudes, Studio 33, Calli's Corner and Millets. (forcing these businesses to close or find other suitable premises, if they can.)
Not only will this affect these small businesses (excluding Millets) but it will also greatly affect the local pubs in and around Dorking. As well as this, there are concerns from some that it will increase crime in Dorking due to some of the kind of clientele a Wetherspoons might attract.
With many homes and flats nearby that house elderly residents and young families, it will also create a lot of noise pollution not only while open, but with people loitering in the St Martins Walk carpark after hours.
Vandalism to the surrounding areas including the car park, nearby play park as well as possible damage to residents and businesses vehicles will likely increase as well.
I feel this is an unsuitable plan, if a Wetherspoons really must open in Dorking (I personally don't like the idea) I'm sure there are better locations they can apply for, (given that they have no guilt pushing other small businesses out,) they could potentially aplly anywhere else in town.

Totally wrong to displace the existing business, one bring a valuable children's charity doing important work for family in and around Dorking, a pub there will only bring in the wrong crowd and make it uncomfortable and unsafe for families with young children.
Dorking does not need another eating I drinking establishment especially one the proposed size. would be much better to get some high street clothing shops in for the younger demographic. this would also increase trade for the existing local eateries and pubs.
Feel this is a major mistake, anti social behaviour will be on the up. Other stores will have to out up shutters and there will be glass windows smashed from time to time. I have lived in areas with wetherspoons and it happens to bring down the region.
Burgundy and Black fits in well to St Martin's Walk and offers its premises to community events. Wetherspoons does not have a connunity ethos and having a pub in this location would ruin what is left of the character of St Martin's Walk.
This is a very bad idea for Dorking. Dorking has many individual and diverse pubs. If a weatherspoons was to open in Dorking these would most likely struggle to compete. We would end up with a town like Leatherhead where there is no pubs in high street.
I was always against this scheme going back to when I lived at The Old House in Westcott in the 1960s & 1970s.

Out of place in this position however the empty Surrey Yeoman would fit JDW style of using and revitalising historic premises. The Assembly Rooms in Epsom are a good example. Also Millets is the only walking gear shop now outside of Guildford and Kingston.
