Dear Students and Alumni,

As many of you know, the Toronto Catholic District School Board is reviewing the possibility for high school closures in the East End of Toronto. This is due to the fact that there is under-subscription in one school (St. Patrick's) and over-subscription in four schools (Vanier, Cardinal Newman, Notre Dame and Neil McNeil).

Currently there are three options on the table:
1. Relocate Notre Dame to St. Patrick's property.
2. Relocate Neil McNeil to St. Patrick's property; and either (a) sell the property, or (b) relocate Notre Dame to Neil property.
3. Provide new programs to St. Patrick's to encourage new enrollment.

On January 7 an ARC public meeting was held at Neil McNeil. ARC committee representatives, current Neil and Dame students, alumni and faculty all overwhelmingly rejected the inclusion of option 1 and 2. Furthermore, it was clear that option 3 was the most favourable to the 300+ people in attendance.

On February 8 another ARC meeting was held, this time at St.Patrick's. ARC committee representatives, current Neil, Dame, St.Pats, Newman and Vanier students, alumni and faculty all were in attendance and still are overwhelmingly rejecting the inclusion of options 1 and 2. Option 3 is still the most favourable and we want to direct our message right to the source.

Mr. Alway, we, the undersigned take a strong and unequivocal stance that OPTION 1 and 2 must be removed from final consideration.

Updates

February 11, 2010

The public meetings have made the community preference for the third option exceptionally clear. We are currently preparing to present this collective feedback directly to the board to ensure these concerns remain at the forefront of their deliberations.

February 11, 2010

The momentum behind this petition highlights the widespread desire to preserve our schools as they currently exist. This progress indicates that the school board must acknowledge the community preference for maintaining our local institutions.

Ridiculous that they even consider moving the schools. Just give them the funding they need instead of destroying the buildings.

Option 3 is the only one that makes sense. Everyone knows it but the board wont listen.

Neil McNeil is a legend in this city. Leave it alone.

St Pats has so much history. Closing it would be a huge mistake for the east end community. Keep it open!

The students already spoke up at the meetings. Why is the board ignoring everyone who actually goes there?
