The Victorian Government, namely Dr. Napthine has put forward a proposal for a redevelopment of the Murrumbeena train station to alleviate the traffic hold up on Murrumbeena Rd. We all agree that's a great idea. What we don't agree with is he seems to have forgotten the life blood of the Murrumbeena Train Station - Darren G. from "The Rail Cafe" that's up and about from 6am onwards serving coffee and more to the hundreds on their daily commute.

Sign this petition to show you want your coffee to stay and for Dr. Napthine to commit to ensuring 'The Rail Cafe' will live on.

Reaching one hundred signatures was not something I expected to happen this quickly. The days have been long and the bureaucratic silence is heavy but your presence here provides the motivation I need to keep pushing forward.

Our powers that be do not grasp the fact that we the people LOVE our remaining pockets of history such as this original small building that used to sell newspapers etc to the travellers heading into the station. Why are our Pollies and Planners hell bent on tearing down our heritage and replacing with glass high rise monstrosities that do nothing but form slums. This beautiful old station, 'Rail Cafe' and leafy surrounds must be saved. This area could be almost compared to a Maling Rd atmosphere as more cafés move into Neerim Rd.

Save our heritage!! Melbourne has an appalling lack of respect for our history, and I find it quite sad that we are fast becoming a very bland city architecturally.

Melbourne's heritage and character are being ruined by bland, uninventive town planners. Don't add this local icon to the graveyard.

I buy my coffee every morning since his been there and it's appalling that the gov would treat a beautiful person to stress about what's going to happen, not keeping him in the loop and putting someone basically out of business. Like the rent at the new joint is not gonna be through the roof. Real sad news but with you Darren all the way!

We need to maintain our heritage. Government are too quick to demolish our history in the name of progress. We can't be proud of our future if we forget our past!

The Rail Cafe is a genuine local institution and both provides an invaluable daily service and adds greatly to the local community character. It should be entirely possible to retain or relocate the cafe alongside the rail/road separation. It's also a pity that the plans don't seem to allow for the retaining of our charming heritage wooden station buildings themselves. I dread to think what kind of blocky, brushed concrete nightmare we'll end up with, which will inevitably look totally shabby and out of date a year or two of construction.

The new station developments are part of further sell-offs to public/private ventures like the Wonthaggi Affair and we will find ourselves without any natural surroundings at the historic stations where I caught the trains for decades whis willbe replaced by more shops so the whole village atmosphere will disappear. Something as large as Box Hill could be built...no worries... a million more cafes with parking waiver applications and the Mayor Pilling and his team will be in agreement with parking waivers stc. He even suggested visitors to the Moreton Ave development could pop into the railway car park. Fortunately, I believe these planned monstrocities depend on asset sales, like any vacant railway land, and it seems to be a no no in the senate!.
