As a pediatrician in the community (Hill Health Center), I can speak to the crucial role that outdoor play serves in the physical and social-emotional development as well as the health of children. Safe, quality outdoor play space that is within walking distance of someone's home can make the difference between an entirely sedentary lifestyle and a healthy one.
We need more parks and playgrounds. Not less. Better would be to use broken down buildings and clear them for rebuild. Not this.
With decrepit parking lots and empty reminders of ugly redevelopment throughout the neighborhood, the park is chosen for a housing development and a parking lot. Shameful.
My daughters attend outdoor church in this space. It serves important functions in this city and neighborhood! How can you think of getting rid of greenspace in the midst of a pandemic where gathering outside is the only safe form of sociality?
It is suffocating to have to fight for the basic human respect in modest neighborhoods. The larger issue is many years of slum landlords profiting so much and giving back so little. The city has neglected this park unnecessarily. Thanks to Pat and team. I hope the Parks Commissioners would come to the Park.

Green space is a vital part of urban planning and layout. Don't take this away from residents. Find another space. Affordable housing is essential but not at the expense of trees, grass, and places for children in New Haven to play and folks to gather. Kierra Jackson, RN
