Hello Fellow Animal Lovers:

FIU is home to dozens of Turtles across the many man-made lakes that are part of the landscape. Unfortunately, once such lake has proven to be a death trap for these turtles. Almost 30 years ago, FIU built Henington Island (http://gogreen.fiu.edu/topics/ecosystems/index.htm...) seen from the 8ST and 112 Avenue entrance . Since I walk/bike to campus every day, I have the unique and disheartening experience of seeing how turtles wonder off into 8 st or the 112 entrance where cars seldom ever stop to let the turtles pass or move them out of the way. The result is that I often encounter dead and crushed turtles (See petition image taken with my phone). When they are alive, I stop traffic to move them back into the lake.

I am not a conservation expert but I do have several ideas to propose to FIU. However, I've called several departments and none of them claim responsibility for these turtles. In fact one department rudely told me "We don't have a turtle department."

I plan to present this petition to the President's office and demand that they fix this issue. If you agree that a World's Ahead institution should provide a safe environment for the animals on campus please sign this petition.

Thank You,

Veronica Torres

The administration continues to dodge my calls about the lack of protective barriers for our campus turtles. Post this petition link on your Facebook feed right now so the President's office understands this is a priority for the entire student body.

The administration can no longer ignore the momentum we have built regarding the safety of these turtles. Post this link on your Facebook pages today and tag the university account to keep the pressure on. Call your local representative and demand that they pressure the university to take responsibility for our campus wildlife.

Dear FIU President, Please surround these lakes with a mini fence, or any cost effective barrier to stop the turtles from getting crushed. Plus, it could pose a traffic hazard to motorists who might swerve to avoid crushing the turtles. I have had turtles as pets, and I can tell you that they areally pretty bright for a reptile. Please don't get rid of them because the sighting of the turtles is pleasant and peaceful. Thank you.

As an FIU alumnus, I am disheartened to see the way FIU is irresponsibly handling the treatment of these turtles. The calming wildlife in FIU in a treasure and should be treated with care as the school seeks to further develop the land. Please FIU, practice what you teach and take care of our environment!

As intelligent and compassionate human beings, we can use our intelligence and resources to save helpless lives even if it's not our department. If we need to build structures to prevent the turtles from walking to their deaths, start a gofundme page and I'll contribute.

Please train your employees to have different responses other than we don't have a turtle department! FIU is in Miami and should be leading the way on environmental concerns! The pond is also a huge attraction for the university! Do better!

BS in environmental science at FIU. These turtles are essential for the living laboratory and add value to the campus overall. They have been there for decades

Please save the turtles. FIU was once my home, I lived in dorms and animals made the campus feel alive. Show them care since we already are in their habitat.
