Property developers have applied to demolish the Earl Haig Hall and build four luxury houses. This will be at the expense of much-needed community facilities. Once it's gone, it's gone forever.

The signatories to this petition request that Haringey's Planning Committee refuse the developer's application on valid planning grounds that include the following:-

1.     The developer states that the existing building is redundant and that there is no other use for the building. Both statements are false. The Earl Haig Hall would be an ideal venue for a multi-use community hall in the heart of Crouch End, thus continuing its historic function but in a 21st century context.

2.     This would be a commercially viable long-term use for the building as there is significant demand for community space in Crouch End. Indeed, a number of local people have already pledged several hundred thousand pounds for its acquisition and refurbishment as a community hall, based on a detailed business plan.

3.     The Earl Haig Hall is a local landmark that has played an important historical and social role in Crouch End for over 80 years. It is an interesting and attractive building in a Conservation Area. Its demolition and replacement by three-storey houses would not enhance the character, appearance and distinctiveness of the Conservation Area, as claimed by the developer.

4.     A case has not been made for demolition or change of use. Both are contrary to Planning Policy CW2 ("Protecting Existing Community Facilities").

5.     The developer claims the proposal will create social benefits by providing housing on the site. It is questionable that this is correct when the proposal is for a small number of luxury houses with no social housing contribution.

WE THE UNDERSIGNED REQUEST HARINGEY COUNCIL TO REFUSE THE APPLICATION TO DEMOLISH THE EARL HAIG HALL
