We, the undersigned, believe that Hornsey Town Hall is a unique and wonderful local asset. We want to see it transferred into community ownership in order to safeguard community use and access in the long term, rather than being sold off to a private developer.

We call on Haringey Council to:

  • Give full Cabinet consideration of Community Asset Transfer of Hornsey Town Hall, as proposed by Hornsey Town Hall Appreciation Society, and
  • Delay the OJEU disposal process for 6 months in accordance with Community Right to Bid legislation

This will provide time for the council and community to work together to deliver the best long term solution that keeps the town hall in community hands.

This petition has been started by the Hornsey Town Hall Appreciation Society - a group set up by the Crouch End Festival and other local organisations to campaign to bring Hornsey Town Hall and Square into community ownership to ensure long term community use and access. If you're interested in the campaign or can help in any way, go to the website and join the facebook page. Please share and tweet about the campaign #saveHTH

I am a long term resident of Crouch End and, since 1987, when I first came here, have been waiting for development for the community of the Town Hall and the main building. To sell it to private contractors would be a betrayal of this community.

I also have many memories of the town hall as a very important place for the dance world. Shows, pantos, competitions including 'All England' heats. It should stay and be used as there are very few places that can still offer the facilities that are there.

The opening of the town hall has created a focal point for the community, bringing it to life with an exciting creative buzz. Crouch End does not have the infra structure to support yet more dwellings -schools, doctors, transport already breaking at the seams.

Other councils manage to support and encourage enterprising use of such buildings and completely to their benefit - Battersea Arts Centre is just one such. Don't be greedy - keep it within the community who really want it and will make it work

Please give urgent consideration to the attached request. The Council has delayed for so many years on HTH that another 6 months will make no difference and may ensure that the CIC has the full chance to put together a viable bid to run the Hornsey Town Hall.

My school's annual Prizegivings were held there in the 1950s/60s and I later worked there in the Town Planning Department 1966-70. To see the town hall and auditorium in the condition they now are brings tears to my eyes. Shame on LBHgy!
