The Town Council just announced that the Apollas Arnold House will be preserved rather than demolished. I honestly feel like I am still in shock that this actually happened because of the momentum you created. You all truly saved a piece of our history that felt lost until now.

We, the undersigned, join the Chatham Historical Society in urging East Hampton's Town Council to reconsider their plan to demolish the Apollas Arnold House (ca. 1790) at 2 Bevin Boulevard for a parking lot. The property is a contributing resource (#140) to the Belltown National Register Historic District and the only 18th century structure remaining in the Village Center! Please preserve and use the Apollas Arnold House, in situ, for the greater good of the community and our collective heritage.

I lived in this house for over twelve years with my family! This absolutely should not happen!! The town needs to step up and save this little piece of history!
Tearing down a historic house to create a parking lot is wrong. If more than the existing parking plus bus area is needed, parking can be extended out into the existing playground which will no longer be utilized when the building is no longer a school
Please find an adaptive reuse for this Belltown National Register #140 Historic Building. We need to preserve our sense of place.. We have enough concrete and asphalt in East Hampton.
Your responsibility is to steward this house into the future. It was not placed on the Historic Register for you to make parking lots. That this is even a consideration is a horrible statement in itself. Please take your responsibility to history seriously.
Parking lots are everywhere. These historic homes are rare and they are a major part of what constitutes the character and beauty of New England. This modest home cannot, CANNOT ever be replaced. What happened to the communities integrity
8/6/2016. DO NOT, PLEASE DO NOT, make this mistake!! Most municipalities have already learned from the destruction of historic and ESPECIALLY places on the NATIONAL HISTORIC REGISTER that the destruction of our tangible American history impoverishes not only us all but makes the municipality charmless and crass. Make this extremely rare dwelling into a museum; restore it; get advice from Historic New England, based in MA; do everything you can to protect learning and continuity.

As an aside from the historical value, the planned demolition of this house by the Town Council on a .48 acre parcel will cost taxpayers lots of money for contamination testing and then in environmental clean up.
