Started by South Dundas History 8 years, 4 months ago

We, the undersigned, ask and request that the Municipality of South Dundas, its administration and elected council, rescind the plan to demolish the 200 year old building in Iroquois, Ontario known as Forward House.

The Iroquois Waterfront Committee included the Forward House as part of their overall waterfront plan. The building has been used by the Lawn Bowling Club.

Forward House is an unprotected, historically significant property to Iroquois. It is one of only three original stone buildings from the old village of Iroquois still remaining. It is one of only six original buildings in Iroquois in their original location.

Much of Iroquois' history was moved, demolished, or flooded, in the St. Lawrence-Seaway project. The Municipality of South Dundas must rescind their demolition plan and preserve this building.

Photo is from the Morrisburg Leader's website, http://www.morrisburgleader.ca and their story on the print petition and history of the building.

I am honestly a bit overwhelmed by the momentum this is gathering. Seeing so many people care about our local history shows that this project belongs to all of you more than it ever belonged to me.

I lived nearby this lovely old house while attending Iroquois High School. There is so little left of the old Iroquois. Surely this historic building is so significant to the cultural heritage of the area that demolition should never be an option.

The history of this area is of national importance. The flooding of historic Canadian towns as part of the construction of the St. Laurence-Seaway resulted in the significant loss of Canadian cultural heritage. We need to protect what is left of historic Iroquois and the remarkable history of this region.

My ancestors, the Werte families, (Weart, Wert), lived here and were forced to move with the village. It was the end of my great-grandfather.

Please save this building (in situe) too much of the rich heritage along the seaway has already lost. If Iroquois Village really doesnt want to maintain it, please, please donate it to Lost Villages Museum or Upper Canada Village.

Pretty sad that all these years no money was ever budgeted or put aside for repairs of the Forward House...Even sadder that the township would evict the lady who has been living in the upstairs for the past 27 years.

To destroy this piece of history would do a disservice to the area - history is Morrisburg's best attribute. Surely it could become a tourist office or something suitable that enhances its value.
