Save Summa at Highland Park
We are the Summa program at Highland Park Middle School, and we have just received some bad news. The school board of Beaverton School District is taking Summa away from two of the schools in the district and moving students to other schools that are also apart of the Summa program. Effective next year, HP's current incoming 6th and 7th graders will be transferred to Whitford Middle School. If this change is implemented, we will lose the family that is here: we will lose our friends and teachers with whom we have a special bond. Summa has made this school a better community and we need it to continue. We implore you to sign this petition and help save Summa.
If this petition is successful, we will move to have more advertising and funds given to the Summa program. The BSD says that Summa is changing because not as many students are in Summa, but we will argue that this is the problem in itself. Why is Summa not as popular? Why are not as many students eligible? These are a few questions that will be posed to the school board. Sign this petition to help keep Summa around, and also improve the setting.
What is Summa? Summa is a program for academically inclined middle schoolers. However, it isn't just a program. Summa students become a family throughout their three years of middle school, and if Summa is transferred to other schools, we willl lose that family, as well as our teachers. Although Summa is tougher than normal school, it is absolutely worth it. Summa is something special and we are working very hard to keep the Summa we know and love at Highland Park Middle School.
