After a Sunday service back in February last year the St Lawrence building committee announced that they wished to remove the pews that have been there for over 200 years. If they go ahead with this plan they will be destroying 200 years of history and ripping out the heart of a beautiful church.

Please add your name to this petition to urge the committee to throw this proposal to where it belongs - the dust bin

I HAVE BEEN SPENDING MY ENTIRE WEEK MEETING WITH LOCALS TO DISCUSS THE DEVASTATING IMPACT OF LOSING THESE HISTORIC PEWS!! THE STORIES PEOPLE ARE SHARING ABOUT THEIR FAMILY HISTORY IN THIS CHURCH ARE ABSOLUTELY POWERFUL AND WE MUST PROTECT THIS LEGACY AT ALL COSTS!!

THE MOMENTUM BEHIND SAVING OUR HISTORIC PEWS IS ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE!! SEEING SO MANY PEOPLE STAND UP FOR THE HEART OF ST LAWRENCE GIVES ME SO MUCH HOPE THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY STOP THIS DESTRUCTION!!

I have never visited this church and am not particularly 'religious' but this idea is just awful and to carry it out would be a real loss :(

Hoped PCC had learnt from the church hall fiasco - this vandalises what makes St. Lawrence so special & only spends money the PCC hasn't got - pls don't do it!!

I suspect that the Committee have opted for this because of deteriorating funding and attendance at the church. If all of the people who signed this petition dontated to the church then I expect that the removal of the pews would not be necessry

My husband Ron Myself his Mum,Nan and generations before them were we're married in this church our children were christened in this beuitifull church, and when O married in this church I wore a long dress and didn't have a problem walking past the pews, also family funerals,so don't rip out part of this lovely church

I totally agree! Our beautiful church ought to be left as it is. Plastic chairs? Yuk! If you find the pews hard, bring a cushion!

I have visited Churches, were they have replaced the chairs with stackable or folding chairs. The whole atmosphere is changed, the reverence of the building gone.

Three years ago my wife and I collected 800 signatures in the village opposing the removal of the pews. We suggested that the first three rows could be made removable to facilitate concerts. The proposed church extension will be suitable for most social events and for larger events the Memorial Hall is close to the church. There is no Christian justification for the expense of ripping out the pews, installing underfloor heating and re-equipping the church with chairs. This money should be spent on more deserving causes.

No, they should not be removed.
