The school board just announced they are keeping our school open. I am truly stunned by this result and I know this happened only because you all showed up to defend our community. Please keep an eye on things as we move forward but for now let us just take …

The Duval County School Board is proposing the closure of Atlantic Beach Elementary. If enacted, this change would result in the elimination of a neighborhood public school serving. This decision would have a negative impact on the students and our beach community.

On March 11, 2024 two plans were presented at a Duval County School Board Workshop- BOTH PLANS PROPOSE CLOSING ATLANTIC BEACH ELEMENTARY. The intent behind both plans is to “right-size” the DCPS district and mitigate rising construction costs.

If either proposal is accepted, the property where Atlantic Beach Elementary is located could be repurposed for use by a charter school. A charter school is not required to provide services to students although Duval would still be required to fund the school. In addition, traffic concerns surrounding Atlantic Beach Elementary will be exacerbated.

We need to save strong neighborhood schools that serve the community. Atlantic Beach Elementary is one of the few to consistently earn an A rating and prides themselves on building strong leaders to serve our community. Decline these proposals to consolidate our neighborhood schools.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many people care about our little school. Getting toward this goal is entirely because of you and your decision to step up for our neighborhood.

Do not close our A- rated elementary school. A high percentage of attendees ride their bikes or walk to school. Moving them to Neptune, without busses will increase traffic in both locations and decrease the community feel we have in AB.

I find it highly suspect that the schools you’re proposing to close happen to be in neighborhoods where development opportunities would be lucrative. As a graduate of ABE and neighbor of this sweet school, I urge you to find another plan.

My 3 boys went there and I was the Crossing Guard when the Seminole Rd was torn up and when the school was painted. I read to classes and I loved them being there. Keep it open for the Atlantic Beach children can experience what my boys did.

As a 35 year property tax paying resident of Atlantic Beach I am stunned that any city representative/Commissioner would not be 100% for keeping the school as it is with some necessary infrastructure improvements. If so, it looks like we need new representatives.

Having neighborhood schools are do important for this community and all communities. Fewer schools means more traffic on the roads, overcrowding, poor work environment for teachers who are already stretched thin, and lower quality of education for our kids.

I strongly believe in keeping Atlantic Beach Elementary a neighborhood public school. Atlantic Beach is a special neighborhood that must keep its character through its neighborhood school. I strongly oppose it becoming a Charter School. There is no good reason for it.
