Save Oakwell Care Centre: Say NO to Devon County Council's Proposal to Privatise Public Sector Care Homes in North Devon

D.C.C. have begun a 45 day consultation period where they will be discussing their proposal to close care homes across North Devon and transfer care to the private sector.
Oakwell Care Centre is a 20 bedded care home in Bickington, North Devon. My grandmother has been a resident there for nearly two years now. She has severe vascular dementia and is often quite confused and upset. Nowhere has been able to meet her care needs quite like Oakwell has - the place and the staff are incredible. Continuity of care for patients with dementia is of paramount importance. My grandmother may have dementia but she has grown to know and love the other residents and staff at Oakwell and the thought of her, and others like her, being taken away from that is just too terrible to comprehend.
We must make D.C.C. aware of the people of North Devon's opinion regarding
their proposal. Please sign the petition and spread the word via Facebook,

The feedback from the council remains discouragingly cold despite the personal stories many of you have shared here. I have spent these past few days documenting the specific care needs at Oakwell to ensure they cannot ignore the human cost of this proposal. We are continuing this fight even when it feels like we are shouting into the void.

Reaching this level of support has been heavy but it confirms I am not alone in fearing what this privatization will do to our families. It is exhausting to fight against a council that ignores us yet seeing this momentum reminds me why I started. We keep going because we have no other choice.

My mother visited Oakwell twice a week until she sadly passed away. She was unable to go out alone and relied on these visits for stimulation and companionship. Oakwell helped her enormously and must be saved to help others like her. Who knows which of us will need support in the future.
Looking after vulnerable members of our societies well is not a profitable buisness. I have great scepticism for private companies who take on these enterprises, it will result in one of two things, more expensive or worse quality care.
This facility does play a vital role in the care of the elderly. It has significant experience in particular with the care of Dimentia. The type of care provided is not available in the private sector. We must look to the future, short term gains may result in long term losses. IT IS VITAL THAT OAKWELL REMAINS OPEN.
The loss of this facility would have a huge impact on the comunity coupled with a substantial loss of employment and considering that dementia is at the forfront
Oakwell is unique in what it provides for the community and it is the only public sector secure unit in North Devon. It is a wonderful place with wonderful people working there caring for the vulnerable and keeping them safe. North Devon needs Oakwell.

My Nan goes to Oakwell for the day on a Monday and Friday, she loves it there as she gets to socialise and play games when otherwise she would be alone in her flat. Her health has improved dramatically since she has been attending due to the great care and square meals they provide. If this facility was to close she would be heartbroken.
