The shop is staying open and I honestly cannot believe it worked because when I started this I just felt so frustrated staring at the closure signs. Thank you for signing and sticking with this even though it felt like a total long shot from the start. We should watch …
This is a Petition to save the Essentials Shop at the Universities At Medway Campus in Chatham Maritime.
University of Kent and Kent Union have announced that the shop will close mid July, despite the shop being popular with both students & staff from all organisations at the campus.
This petition will enable us to lobby the university and show them that we need this shop to remain open.
I really thought this might just be a total shot in the dark but the way people are showing up for this shop is honestly overwhelming. I have been reading all your stories about how much you rely on the store between lectures and now I have to figure out the best way to get all these names in front of the people at the university because ignoring us is going to be pretty difficult after this.

I just looked at the screen and saw we hit a hundred signatures which is honestly kind of shocking but also really encouraging because I was worried nobody would care about the shop closing. It makes me feel like maybe they will actually listen to us if we keep pushing despite how busy everyone is with exams right now.

I have been reading through all your notes about why the shop matters and it really highlights how much we rely on it for things that are actually essential during long study sessions. The silence from the administration is honestly frustrating but I am still working on getting a meeting to show them exactly how many of us are impacted by this closure.

To have a campus with nearly 10,000 students on it and no campus shop is absolutely ludicrous and I couldn't be more disheartened, especially considering Medway is supposed to be a priority campaign this year.

A shop is essential to both staff and students on a large isolated campus like this. Students living on the campus need to be able to access provisions easily and removing this service will disadvantage students and this will probably be reflected in the student satisfaction surveys!

Yet again Medway services, when they actually exist, are cut. Students here pay the same fees as everybody else. This is scandalous and a move we cant take lying down, its time for Medway students to demand a university experience that's worth £9,000 a year.

We have international students arriving for our halls of residence straight off of the plane. That there is (was) a shop onsite where they could buy food and get the bits needed to go online was extremely valuable. It will be a great shame to remove this valuable asset from campus.

I am amazed that this shop is not making money. There seems to be queues everytime I go in there. I'm not a student. I work on campus (not for the university) and it is used by myself and my colleagues regularly. Everybody was suprised to hear that it was considering closure :-)

As a supervisor at Essentials in Medway it will be sad to see the iconic shop lost for the campus and I would love to see the shop stay maybe in a smaller capacity. I just hope the backing from all Students on the campus will be enough to show the board that it is worth saving.
