The bookshop, which was opened in 1994 and has been in its present location for six years, has become a lively part of the University community. Now Blackwell are planning to close the branch at the end of 2011, and ten staff members have received notice of redundancy.
The reputation of the University in the eyes of many students and prospective students is likely to be negatively affected by the lack of a specialist campus bookshop. It will be missed by all the University staff who rely on it. But the loss of this bookshop is also a loss to Sheffield and to the Cultural Industries Quarter of the city.
If Blackwell are prepared to close a bookshop serving one of the largest Universities in the country, are any of their bookshops safe?

Seeing this kind of energy for our bookshop feels overwhelming because it proves the campus wont let this place vanish without a fight. I spent so many hours browsing those shelves as a student and your responses remind me that this location is truly the heart of our community.

I've been going there since my first year. It's more than just a shop, it's part of the community. Don't close it!!
Ten people loosing their jobs right before Xmas? Blackwell should be ashamed of themselves. Support the staff!
Such a shame. The staff there are always so helpful finding weird titles for my essay research. Going to miss this place.
This is honestly such a huge loss for the campus. Where are we supposed to get our course books now? Order them online and wait days? Not good enough.
Ridiculous. Sheffield Hallam is a huge uni, how can you not have a bookshop? Really sad for the staff too.
