The council has officially prohibited the culling of badgers on their lands in favor of local vaccination efforts. This outcome reflects the commitment of those in our community who demanded a more humane approach. We will keep monitoring the implementation of these measures to ensure they remain in place.

This is a national issue which will be of direct concern to the people of East Devon District Council when DEFRA "rolls out" its culling policy in 2014.
The object of the petition is to ensure that East Devon District Council's badger population is as safe as possible from slaughter and that the already available injectable badger vaccine against bTB is used in as many cases as possible.
We ask this because we believe the culling policy is inhumane (DEFRA's measurement of "humaneness" is to time the screams of wounded badgers), inefficient (previous culls showed an increase in bTB because of badger movement) and unscientific (the majority of scientific opinion hold that a cull will have "no meaningful result").

The feedback from local residents has been encouraging and confirms the widespread desire for humane alternatives to the current culling policy. I am currently preparing a formal letter to the local councillors to ensure our position is clearly represented during the upcoming policy review.

This is an ill thought through campaign that you must reconsider. Badgers are vital and important animal in our countryside and further more how do you explain that 2 farms near us and next door to each other. 1. has had TB and one does not ever. Same badgers roam over each farm
Vaccination of both cattle and badgers is the only credible way forward. Devon has one of the largest, if no the largest group of volunteer badger vaccinators in the country, who will vaccinated badgers for just the cost of the vaccine. As well as being humane, causing no disruption to either the badgers or to rural communities, this is also far cheaper than hosting a badger cull.
The facts are that culling badgers does not affect the incidents of TB in cattle but simply increases the movement of badgers around the country. TB is a problem of cattle farming itself and the cruel persecution of any wildlife species is futile.
The majority of the badgers killed in the recent cull were shot after having been trapped, which means they could have been vaccinated instead. Farmers are a powerful lobby but should not be the only ones to have a say.
Living in a rural area outside Honiton, I do not agree with a badger cull. Improve bio-security, develop vaccines.
Vaccination & biosecurity will be effective in the long term - culling is cruel & ineffective.
I really think badger culling is wrong .. all the experts that you consulted think it is wrong .. you are really not doing any good by letting this continue to either your reputations, the dairy industry but most of all to the badgers. They own the land more than we do really .. doing to them what you do is like doing to the Native American Indians was done by the invaders and to the Aboriginis by the invaders and to the Maoris by the Invaders .. they are no different .. they deserve respect and gratitude that we use their land for our own gain .. Think again .. there are many of us that think this way.

Wildlife is a big tourist draw. BTB decreasing every year, cull inhumane, proven not to work. Cost over £4k per kill, spend it on vaccination instead
