This is a national issue which will be of direct concern to the people of Colchester Borough Council when DEFRA "rolls out" its culling policy in 2014.

The object of the petition is to ensure that Colchester Borough Council's badger population is as safe as possible from slaughter and that the already available injectable badger vaccine against bTB is used in as many cases as possible.

We ask this because we believe the culling policy is inhumane (DEFRA's measurement of "humaneness" is to time the screams of wounded badgers), inefficient (previous culls showed an increase in bTB because of badger movement) and unscientific (the majority of scientific opinion hold that a cull will have "no meaningful result").

To preserve the integrity of this petition please only sign it if you live, work or study in the Colchester Borough Council area.

We, the undersigned, call on Colchester Borough Council to prohibit the culling of badgers on council-owned land and invest in vaccination programmes locally. We ask this because we believe culling to be inhumane, inefficient and unscientific.

Vaccination & biosecurity will be effective in the long term - culling is cruel & ineffective.

The only way enough badgers could be culled was by trapping them---- SO they could have been injected and an ear clipped, to show they have been treated. Or do these people just enjoy the killing?

Badger culling is totally inhumane. Badgers are sentient beings just like people. This is no way to treat a beautiful species which is part of nature and our ecology. We are causing enough devastation to our environment. This madness must stop.

I've yet to see any solid evidence that confirms Badgers are a TB risk to cattle. Bovine Tuberculosis can be treated with antibiotics (as well as Foot & Mouth) even though this provides more financial support for the chemical/pharmaceutical industries. Haven't we got a moral responsibility to work alongside our wildlife,as our population steadily grows and we continue to take over more green areas, which provides more housing and fields for beef production. The wildlife which has been there for many generations then turn into "urban-animals" and "a problem" when ultimately we've invaded their home/living areas.

I think it is abhorrent to even think of bringing this murderous act to this town and strongly disagree with it. It has proved to be totally fruitless in other regions and just gives killers an excuse to slaughter these lovely and innocent animals. WE DO NOT WANT OR AGREE TO THIS CULL!!!!

A badger cull would not help anything as bovine tb is not as much a problem in this area, and splitting up families of badgers by killing half of them will spread any problem further
