The YMCA of Cape Breton is going to begin renovations on the only publicly available regulation sized squash courts in Cape Breton on May 8th. If you are looking to utilize the squash facilities in the future please make your voice heard by supporting this petition to save the courts!

Updates

March 29, 2023

The feedback from local players has been overwhelming. I am currently reaching out to the YMCA to request a formal meeting about these plans.

The momentum is incredible. We are showing them that these courts matter to this community.

This is not a wise decision. A squash court costs upwards of $70,000 capital cost and is not mobile like spin bikes. Whomever is manking this decision needs to rethink it. There are also safety issues.

A space for spin classes, aerobics, boot camps, CrossFit, yoga, etc., can be created out of almost any existing space. Squash courts in the province are limited in number to begin with. We need to protect those that exist and, if anything, put more money into updating them and better promoting the sport overall.

Squash is awesome! My daughter is talking Nursing at CBU, the awesome squash community at the YMCA helps her stay fit and active. If the court closes it will mean the distraction of a great community. So sad. Squash is one of the healthiest sports in the world, a sport people can play at any age or fitness level. It’s not just a sport but a passion for so many.

This renovation will kill the sport of squash in Cape Breton. As we see more and more people moving here from other provinces as well as the building of the new NSCC campus, I feel that the timing of this couldn’t come at a worse time. It is a great activity that can be modified for any age group and is a great way for newcomers to meet people.

The Cape Breton squash tournament is a highlight of the year, and losing half of the available courts in Sydney would be devastating to the squash community. The decision to renovate is short-sighted and should be reversed.

These renovations will cause permanent damage to the court's unique infrastructure. The substantial renovations would be very costly to un-do and there would never be sufficient funding to remediate the court in the future. #savecapebretonsquash

Squash is an awesome sport and has been rated as the healthiest sport to play. Smarten up!!!

There are many other unpurposed areas that could be used to help meet more needs. This renovation to remove a squash court is unnecessary.
