Grant MacEwan University announced on January 14, 2014 that it would permanently close the four squash courts in the Christenson Family Centre for Sport and Wellness in April 2014, and convert the courts into fitness and studio facilities.
If you disagree with the decision, please sign this petition.

Updates

February 23, 2014

I just refreshed the page and saw we hit 250 signatures which is honestly way more than I thought would happen when I started this because who actually spends their time signing things online anyway. It feels strange thinking about those courts just disappearing after all the weird matches I played there over the years but I guess people really do care about keeping them around.

We are climbing toward the 250 signature mark and I honestly cannot believe how fast this is moving but we really need a final surge to make sure the administration actually looks up from their desks when we walk in there. If you know anyone who still spends their afternoons on those courts please nudge them to sign right now before the floor space gets turned into just another row of boring treadmills.

I was just looking at the total and realized we are hovering right under that first hundred mark which honestly feels like a strange hurdle but it really is one. If you could grab the link and toss it over to a group chat or maybe just one person who actually plays there it might be enough to finally tip us over the edge.

I applaud Grant MacEwan's direction to offer first-rate student services and programs. However, closing the squash courts will result in public and student perception of a less-than-first-class facility and could negatively impact potential student enrollment and program sustainability.

This is ridiculous. MacEwan has one of the highest number of Edmonton Squash League teams in Edmonton. Obviously these courts are used by the student population and the community. Rescind the decision.

It would be a shame that the 'Wellness Centre' contribute to the local demise of a sport. Why can the courts not be utilized during their slow times for other fitness activities and then re-designated for squash during peak times?

As I figured. I walkes by the new spin area during our match on Tuesday night and there were three people in the spin class in the already converted court. Obviously the members of the board have never played a game of squash or been in a gym in the last year.

I have been a member and supporter of Grant MaCEwan Sport and Wellness for most if the years it has been in existence. I am truly disappointed in the decision and greatly concerned about the reduced opportunity to introduce new players to this support for life.

A shame to lose any more squash courts in Edmonton... will be limited in this city to 2 courts at Kinsmen, a handful at Riverbend Athletic club, and nevermind the prohibitive fees at Royal Glenora Club... DON'T let squash become an exclusive sport!
