They actually said yes and the district is implementing the security plan starting next term. I am honestly still in shock that this worked out but I suppose being loud really does pay off when you refuse to quit even when things seem impossible. We have to keep watching them …

I, Rosemary Wagner, and my friend Sabrina Slaughter, had some thoughts and ideas regarding the security at Montrose High School and other schools here. We understand that there are so many different factors in what we would like to see happen, but we also think that we should try to do something. We’ve seen people across the country trying to arm teachers, but we know that a lot of teachers and students, along with some parents, wouldn’t feel comfortable with that. What we’re proposing, is to add some type of armed security guards within the schools. We think that having the guards be retired veterans with previous firearm experience would add comfort and safety along with having the guards take frequent psyche evaluations. Being students ourselves, we would want these people to not look intimidating, for example, not wearing a uniform and concealing their weapons. If we had a few spread out across the school, possibly at all of the entrances and exits, we feel that not only could it prevent or stop serious threats, but also keep more minor problems like ditching and bullying, under control. If the school had these people also seen at school activities outside of school hours, we think students, faculty, and parents would grow to have trust with the guards. As for finding retired veterans, we are contacting organizations.

I honestly did not think this would gain this much steam when we first hit publish but the momentum is actually wild right now. Reading through the comments while I was procrastinating on my history homework was honestly the best part of my day because I realized so many people feel exactly how we do. It is just really incredible to see all these people coming together for the sake of feeling safer in the hallways.

As a veteran with some firearm experience, I would volunteer. I do think it would be necessary for all applicants to have a refresher course in firearm training and a background check.

We need to take any and all measures we can to keep our children safe. I hope to see this go into effect, not only in the high school, but in the elementary and Junior high schools also.

Our children are too precious to leave unprotected. Honestly, if we think it's a good idea for armed guards to protect our money at a bank, why wouldn't we want the same if not better protection for our kids?

This majes perfect sense and let all kids county wide know tgat we have say 40 armed guards. And that they will be rotating between all schools so that no one knows who they are and which school any one or maybe 5 at one school at any time. I would much rather pay for this on my taxes than other wasted taxes. And I’ll bet if you reached out to some of the retired military that are not working they would be willing to volunteer say 2 days a month.

I hope this actually happens :) there was one security guard when I was a freshman in 2009. Then just seemed to disappear. Id love to feel like the students are protected and they feel safe.

Excellent thoughts. They need to be in uniform for identification not only by students, but also for police in the event of an incident.

A WONDERFUL idea. Also a fire extinguisher in every class room.
