The proposed closure of rural Post Offices betrays the mission statement of An Post, a mission that states An Post will, “provide world class postal, distribution and financial services with unrivaled local community access and global connections”.
Closure of Post Offices is making money not saving money, it is profiting on the back of vulnerable people.
The Closure of rural post offices will be the demise of the social connection with people living in rural Ireland. It further exacerbates rural isolation along with the closure of banks, lack of transport and loss of services in rural areas.
Post Offices create community sustainability, collected pensions and social welfare payments are spent in local shops thus sustaining the economic viability of our communities and ensuring much needed local employment.

They have closed the bank in our town and now I watch a large number of the elderly queue on the side of our street in the winter rain and cold waiting their turn to enter a mobile unit. If they close the post office's all the other elderly which I meet on Friday mornings in the post office collecting our pensions will be condemed to the same faith, and what of those who live in remote areas where there is no broadband. What good is electronics to them?.
