For those of you who are not yet aware, Adams' Grammar School has recently announced that, as of January 1st, 2018, the school's name will be changed to Haberdashers' Adams. While this is intended to reconnect the school with its history with the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, it will disadvantage future leavers as they will no longer have the benefits of having been to a "Grammar School" on their CV or other applications. The school already has enough connection with the Haberdashers with the Year 7 annual trip to Habs Hall and the annual visit from the Haberdashers to the school.
The acronym "AGS" is so much more than a name to the students of the school. It is a symbol of great memories and a great education. It cannot just be changed at a moment's notice without consultation with the students and staff of the school, many of whom are not happy with the change.
This petition will be presented to the headmaster of the school upon the receipt of 600+ signatures. Support for this campaign would be greatly appreciated in an attempt to #SaveOurAGS.

I honestly never thought this would reach 500 signatures when I first started this. It is truly your passion for the school that has brought us this far. Thank you for showing that the AGS identity matters so much to all of us.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many of you feel the same way about our school name. We are getting so near to that five hundred mark because of the energy you all have brought to this. If you know anyone else who feels strongly about keeping our history, please nudge them toward the link today.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many people care about this name as much as I do. We are nearing a hundred signatures which is far more than I ever imagined when I started this. Please keep telling people why AGS remains such a vital part of our history.

Haberdashers have links with Abraham Darby School too, yet they have thus far kept their identity. Such a shame for the pupils who won’t be able to list “Grammar School” on their CVs... “Haberdashers Adams” doesn’t sound half as impressive.

As an Old Boy of the school (1958 - 1965) I have been proud of my grammar school education which has stood me in good stead throughout my professional career and the name of the school is revered nationally and abroad. It is important to the future of the School that the name is not changed.

I'm disappointed there appears to have been no alumni/student consultation in this decision. An expensive rebranding cannot be justified when there are far more pressing concerns for the school.

This change is unnessecary. At a time of real terns education funding cuts any money not spent directly on improving the learning of students is inexcusable.

Proud AGS former pupil & Newport resident now a teacher myself and this name suggests the Head is more concerned about funding than the history of the school, despite the comments to the contrary in the press release.

The name change will destroy the history and good name of the school. It is a school which several generations of my family attended and I can think of no good reason why the name should ever be changed.

Dispirited to learn of the name change. AGS is a well-known and respected name in education. Whilst we all owe a thanks to the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, the school doesn’t need rebranding to feature their name. The school name may have evolved over time, but there are data and records for AGS that employers can reference. Current and new pupils in particular will be disadvantaged by this new and uninspiring name that nobody recognises.
