We as parents of Thoreau School students would like to congratulate Concord School Superintendent Diana Rigby on her choice of Chris Mahoney as Interim Principal for Thoreau Elementary School. He has provided a mature, stabilizing presence at a school that has seen its share of challenges in the past 3 years. He appears to be a very thoughtful, experienced educator who would be an excellent permanent Principal. In the short time that he has been at Thoreau, he has clearly demonstrated his strong support for the school, it's students and it's faculty through his regular e-mail newsletters to parents and his attendance at multiple extra-curricular events. We feel he has done an excellent job of being highly approachable and of keeping us informed of news and events related to the school. Through his communications he has also demonstrated his understanding of issues relevant to grade school education (math in particular). Through his letters, he has informed us that he grew up in Concord and has demonstrated sensitivity to issues facing Concord residents. We appreciate the perspective that Chris brings to our school community through his experience of travelling and working in other states and overseas.
We truly hope we will be able to offer him the position of Principal on a permanent basis. It would be tragic for Thoreau and our community if we had to change principals for the 4th time in 4 years when we have an excellent Principal in place.

I am currently coordinating meetings with school board members to discuss why the stability Chris Mahoney brings is non-negotiable for our children. Please email your district representative today to ask that they prioritize this permanent appointment. Keep the pressure up until we get a formal response.

I believe Chris has done a great job this year as temporary Principal at Thoreau School. I grew up with Chris here in Concord and can attest to his strong character. Also, as a Thoreau alumnus, he is a perfect choice to be the next permanent principal of Thoreau.
Chris comes across as both a wonderful educator and administrator. It is terrific to have such open communication and our school could benefit from his enthusiasm and leadership. We live on his old street in Concord; the neighbors remember him warmly, recalling him leading neighborhood children through musicals and plays when younger, and are utterly unsurprised that he is not only an educator but both committed and highly regarded.
My son keeps telling me that Chris Mahoney is the best principal they ever had. He says, that he is more fun and that he understands them better. Also that he comes to see them more often in the classroom.
We have been part of the Thoreau school for 3 years and have seen three principals. Chris has taken the most active, enthusiastic role I have seen. We finally have a leader who truly loves Thoreau, our children and is committed to breathing new life, new ideas and a better sense of community.
As a new family moving to Concord, Chris Mahoney made us all feel very comfortable, welcome and at ease in what can be a challenging situation for most. My two children expressed how much they liked him and how fortunate my daughter was to have him as her Principal. My sixth grade son even said "No fair! I want him as my Principal, he's so nice!"

I have been grateful for the leadership, kindness, and integrity Chris Mahoney has shown in his time as our principal. After the very difficult years the Thoreau community went through, it has desperately needed a leader with those characteristics. Principal Mahoney has been helping the Thoreau community feel happy and hopeful about the direction in which we are moving. Please allow this to continue..
