On July 10, 2020, Rod Cowan was attacked and had deadly bodily injury in GUNTERSVILLE, AL. The American Legion and patrons reported it as a fall. Rod died from a result of the injuries of the homicide and the police treated it as a medical incident and did no initial investigation. Rod was unresponsive, unconscious and could not speak for himself. The scene was not secured as a crime scene, it was cleaned up, no report was filed and no witnesses interviewed, and the attacker was protected- thereby justice was obstructed. There is no policy in place, currently, to ensure officers ask more questions on a call of a “medical fall call” to police. We believe this is not up to date police work. Let’s ask the city administration and department to add a new policy to ensure that those who cannot speak for themselves can tell their side of the story: demand interviews of those on scene, pull cctv footage to corroborate story, file a report and start an investigation. A family member of the deceased had to ask for an investigation. Let’s Remember Rod and also prevent this from happening again to any of our loved ones in the future.

I am working to get a direct meeting with city administration to present these signatures and demand a policy change for medical calls. Post this link on your Facebook wall today and tag your local representatives to keep the pressure on them. We need to force them to address why these incidents go uninvestigated.

The momentum behind this push proves people are tired of seeing justice obstructed for the vulnerable. Now we need to translate this energy into action. Email your local representatives today and demand they adopt a formal policy for investigating medical calls that involve head injuries.

Kudos to you for honoring him in such a meaningful way - hopefully another family will not have to go through this.

I don't think this is is asking much.. frankly it should be apart of every serious investigation.

A good man gone too soon. May Rod’s legacy live on. Petition that proper actions take against American Legion and every one that let this happen

This man was a great man. His son is one of my brothers, and this family needs justice @ the least for what they have been through. I can’t imagine the pain but I’ve seen my buddy’s pain and it’s terrible for him. This has been mishandled from the beginning. Justice has to be served for this man was a great father, brother, uncle, paw paw, and friend , a friend of mine.#JUSTICEFORROD!!
