The university finally backed down and Uncle Al is officially staying at the clubhouse. They tried to throw a legend out on the street for a faceless tenant but we forced them to reverse this shameful decision. Keep your eyes open because this institution clearly needs to be watched.

It is with great sadness that this petition goes out to the world.

On Tuesday 10 February the University Informed Alan Leonard (Uncle Al) that he has 6 days to vacate rugby clubhouse as a new university tenant had been appointed to replace him. Alan Leonard (Uncle Al) is the backbone of the Wits University Rugby Club. He has given many years of service, not only to the rugby club but also to any person or organisation on Wits campus that requires assistance.

Uncle Al has served Witsies, past and present, with so much passion and spirit; yet the University is prepared to turn their back upon him. They are prepared to evict him and take away his only form of income on 6 days’ notice.

As the Wits University Rugby Committee, Past and Present Students, Wits Clubmen and everyone else who has ever experienced Jomo's for what Alan Leonard made it;

We demand that you reinstate our Uncle Al as the Wits University Rugby clubhouse tenant.

The sheer weight of this support proves that Wits management cannot just toss aside a legend like Uncle Al without a fight. This momentum is shaking the university administration and they are starting to realize that we will not let them destroy the heart of our clubhouse.

This just goes to show you that the hierarchy don't have a clue what goes on at grassroot level and this is where a club and people learn about being a club man ! But if this process goes through my loyalty and support leave with Uncle Al.

Alan provides a personal and dedicated service to the Wits Rugby Clubhouse (Jomos). With my dealings with him to organize braais and events at Jomos for Varsity Kudus running club, he was always helpful, professional and friendly. It makes no sense that Alan should be asked to leave within 6 days!

I was so shocked to hear about this. It's terrible. Alan has run the pub so well and been so supportive all Wits sports groups. His doors were always open to us at the running club and he help connect us with the rugby club. I can't imagine the rugby club without Alan.

The loss of Big Al will send the Wits rugby players into dire stratus. He has been the rock in our club for the past 10 or so years. Winning clubman of the year last year epitimises this. Club games will have very few supporters if any if this actually takes place. Interfaculty will cease to exist. There is no man who could do a better job. A private company running the pub will not survive the year. I am guttered as the times spent have been truly memorable and unfortunately no more memories will be made.

I was a member of wits rugby club for over 10 years, I've seen 2 tenants service the club and nobody come close to the dedication, passion and love big AL has for the club. the club is not interested in someone to serve us beers, and sell us food for a profit, we need a club man who puts more back into the club than they get out, someone who will give a stranded player a lift or taxi fare, be there on club nights and pre-season mornings even if not a single drink is sold, provide for the team's need out of good will and take a genuine interest in the club's well being as well as individuals and results. Put ur New tenant into Jomos, (which was done through connections ) but they will not get a cent from me, not even a smile!

Uncle Al is a genuine colourblind rugby man. He's gone the extra mile for all us of at the Rugby club. His efforts have really kept spirit of Wits Rugby alive. He's man who's gone beyond the scope of pub manager. from dropping players off after work to organising registration money for struggling student. We as the club cannot afford to lose AL.

Its a difficult job, one that I have always found well done by Alan. Don't try and fix what's not broken.wits rugby and jomo's have been a very pleasurable part of my life over many years.
