I am a member of The University of Tampa community and believe that the University must improve its recycling program so that:

  • Recycling is more available in every dorm
  • Recycling in public spaces, academic spaces, and recreational facilities is expanded and more clearly labeled
  • The University of Tampa leads by example in environmental sustainability within the Tampa Bay Community

I expect a higher standard of recycling at The University of Tampa.

The administration remains silent on our demand for better recycling bins, but your stories about the lack of options in the dorms prove this is a major problem. Email the Dean of Students today to demand an update on their sustainability plan. Post our link on your dorm group chat to keep the pressure on.

The momentum behind this push for better campus facilities is undeniable. Text three friends right now and tell them why we need recycling bins in our dorms.

I was a co-founder of UT-TBAEP and an active member of Tri-Beta and EPC while enrolled at UT from 2006 to 2010. There was hardly any recycling when I was an undergraduate student and fully support additional efforts to make recycling more mainstream than trash itself.

We especially need recycling in the trash rooms in the dorms. I specifically remember seeing endless amounts of cardboard boxes and other recyclable materials during move in week and thinking it was such a shame there was nothing in place to better dispose of it all.

I live in Palm Apartments and it is super inconvenient to walk all the way to Austin Hall (that’s the only bin I know of) to recycle. It’s to the point where I am too busy to walk over there and recycle so I toss it in the trash. Need at least one bin in every trash room (not just in Palm)!!

One of the places I see needing recycling the most is on the athletic fields. People have water bottles on the fields all the time—especially during intramurals—and they throw the bottles away simply because that is the easiest and nearest option available.

UT should be a leader in Tampa Bay for sustainability but sadly we are not there yet if we can't even place recycling bins in all of the dorms. Also, rumor has it, the bins that are for recycling get thrown in the trash anyway because of poor labeling. UT- please address this.

Every time I ask why we don’t have readily accessible recycling I am told that it makes our campus “less ascetically pleasing” and I think that’s ridiculous because if I were touring colleges it would be a huge plus for me to see clean recycling stations.

The lack of recycling is unacceptable and disappointing. Do better UT.
